Lost – destroyed or ruined physically or morally/damned
Salvation – a saving or being saved from danger, evil, difficulty, destruction, etc., rescue/deliverance from sin and from the penalties of sin; redemption
“But about that day or hour no one knows. Not even the Son, but only the Father.” (Matthew 24:36)
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” (Matthew 24:42)
We do not know when the Lord will return, but we do know we are closer today than we were yesterday. The time is growing shorter and the lost need to know about the gift of salvation God gives us through Jesus. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16 – 17) “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved.” (Ephesians 2:4 -5) We cannot save the lost, but Jesus said we are to spread the good news of Salvation. In the Handbook of Bible Application, (Neil S. Wilson, Editor) it states, “God’s love for each individual is so great that he seeks each one out and rejoices when he or she is “found”.” (page 392) God desires all to be saved and we need to be praying for those who need salvation and to explain that it is more than just knowing about Jesus. The lost need to understand the salvation plan and know that we cannot save ourselves regardless of how good we think we are. “. . .for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood – to be received by faith.” (Romans 3:23 – 25a) But how do we get this salvation, the lost may ask, just as the people asked Peter, “Brothers, what should we do? And Peter replied, “Each one of you must turn from sin, return to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; then you also shall receive this gift, the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2: 37 -38) “To turn from sin means changing the direction of your life from selfishness and rebellion against God’s laws. At the same time, you must turn to Christ, depending on him for forgiveness, mercy, guidance, and purpose. We cannot save ourselves – only God can save us.” (Handbook of Bible Application, page 550). In the Handbook of Bible Application, it goes on to say “Salvation is totally from God through Jesus’ death. There is nothing we can do to earn our salvation; we need only accept what Jesus has already done for us.” (page 551) “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:9 -10.
As the hymn by John Newton says:
“Amazing grace! how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see.”
